TALCOT STUDENTS: THE BEST INGREDIENT...

Student life here at Talcott Mountain Academy is unlike any other. Here they can enjoy small class sizes and a wide range of grade levels, where life-long friendships are formed and everyone's individual star can really shine. Many compare Talcott to a university in its physical appeal: a large campus-like setting between specialized buildings, fields, trails, and it's distinctive panoramic view of the Connecticut valley. Students here are unique in ability and interests, so you can always find interesting minds and exciting events.

How does TMA help me succeed?
All students at the Talcott Mountain Academy are on the road to success by taking advantage of our small classes and one-on-one help from teachers. Students receive homework planners to record homework assignments, and for long-term assignments like the Science Fair, students receive a Planning Sheet with objectives and deadlines. Students also have a TMA webpage that helps track weekly homework assignments by subject. We have the newest technology at our fingertips at the Hypermedia Library, and students get to meet and learn from experts in the field of mathematics, science, languages, and many more.

Does TMA have a Student Council, and what kind of fun activities do students enjoy?
The Student Council at TMA provides social events for students, promotes community service and communicates student issues to the Dean and Administration. Elections for President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Suite Representatives are held each fall. Every year at TMA, we have different student activities and events to keep every year fresh and exciting. Halloween Dances, Holiday Parties, Spirit Fridays, Luaus, Robotics, fundraisers, food and item drives, a mathematical artist in residence program for grades 7 & 8, Moon Math, and special Field Trips are just a few of the fun things students at the Talcott Mountain Academy enjoy.

What are themes all about?
Every year the TMA staff puts on its creativity hat and comes up with a theme that is integrated across all subject areas. This keeps the curriculum fresh and exciting for the students and teachers. This year's theme is "How We Learn". Methods were introduced to help retain information better. Last year's theme was "The Science of Art, the Art of Science": different ways that math and science are integrated in everything we see and create.

What does a TMA day consist of?
The school day at Talcott Mountain Academy is divided into 8 periods of 40 minutes each. There is a 20 minute homeroom at the beginning of the day, and a 5 minute homeroom at the end of the day. Lunch/recess break is 40 minutes and occurs in periods 4 and 5. Many subjects are block scheduled (grouped together) to help add more time-on-task. There is a weekly Mentor/Advisor time and a double-period for Enrichment classes. Study class is offered one period each week to let students get extra help from teachers.

Does TMA have an After-school Program?
Yes! Talcott Mountain Academy offers an after-school program from 3PM - 5PM where students can learn while they play! Card tricks, Origami, Wood crafts, computers, field games, cross-word puzzle-making, Competitive Scrabble, Word and Number games, and World Record-Breaking activites are just a few of the fun activities that kids can participate in Monday through Friday. There is a different activity every day, and there are different themes every term.
