Tips for Authors

Have you written an article, story, or poem that you'd like to share with others beyond the Talcott Mountain community? To find the right match for your work, start by becoming familiar with the subjects, authors, length, and style of projects previously accepted for presentation or publication. Ideally, attend seminars or conferences sponsored by the organization or review several issues of the journal in question. Use indexing tools and conference websites to evaluate the manner and extent of prior works related to your topic. Is your concept new and different? Does it update or shed new light on a previously discussed topic? Are the credentials of past presenters or authors comparable to yours?

Following a general survey of venues for your work, review the author submission guidelines and publication calendar (or conference timetable). Become familiar with the citation format used -- the American Psychological Association (APA) format is commonly used in education publications. Library and internet sites offer abbreviated summaries and examples of the scholarly formats. To ensure error-free submissions, it is prudent to obtain the complete current APA Style Manual. Citation manager programs (free and commerical) are also available which format and integrate your citations and footnotes in your word processing document. Some online subscription journal databases included functions which export citations from articles you select directly to your citation manager. If you choose to use one of these products, allow sufficient time in your project schedule to become familiar with the operation of the program.

Presenting at Seminars and Conferences

Seminars, conferences, and workshops offer the opportunity to share your observations and teaching strategies in a more informal setting. You may use a PowerPoint® presentation or a few pages of handouts to illustrate your talk. These settings allow for an interactive approach, with questions and contributions from your peers. You can model the concept you're presenting, and audience members can try applying the concept as part of the workshop. Below are some of the leading professional learning opportunities for our region:

New England Conference on Gifted and Talented Education

Confratute (U. of Connecticut)

Connecticut Association for the Gifted

Poster session participants place materials such as pictures, data, graphs, diagrams and narrative text on boards that are usually 4' x 8' (dimensions vary slightly by Convention Center). During their assigned time periods, participants informally discuss their presentations with conference attendees and may hand out abstracts of their presentation, and lesson plans, forms, or checklists with which to implement a proposal.

Poster sessions may present any of the following:
